The establishment of institutions like SAANS is part of a broader effort to preserve and develop the culture and heritage of the indigenous people of Sabah. This includes the establishment of the Native Court in Sabah during the British administration, which played an important role in regulating the way of life of indigenous peoples of various ethnicities and cultures. The Native Court was administered by the Chief Native and Elders who were well-versed in customary law.

Sekolah Adat Anak Negeri Sabah (SAANS) plays a significant role in the society of Sabah.

Here are some of the key roles it serves:

  • Preservation of Culture and Heritage: SAANS is dedicated to preserving and developing the culture and heritage of the indigenous people of Sabah. It has its own curriculum and syllabus that are registered with the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia.
  • Education and Research: SAANS offers diploma and degree programs in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS)⁴. It has also partnered with Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and INTI International University to conduct research and training on the use of information, communication and technology (ICT) in cultural preservation and development.
  • Community Engagement: SAANS actively engages with the community through its activities, events, and achievements, which it shares with the public on its Facebook page.
  • Recognition of Cultural Warriors: SAANS has named some of its branches after prominent Sabah leaders who fought for the rights and dignity of the indigenous people.

Through these roles, SAANS contributes to the well-being of the indigenous peoples of Sabah, safeguarding their welfare and privileges, and helping to regulate their way of life.
